A non-governmental organisation launched here last December, will spend over Sh24 million for environmental cleanliness in Arusha. The Arusha Development Foundation (ArDF) will purchase about 150 litterbins to be placed at street corners in the municipality where litter would be thrown into.
The chairman of the NGO, Mr Elifuraha Mtowe, told reporters here on Thursday that environmental sanitation was the priority of ArDF which came into being on December 19, last year. He said the NGO would collaborate with other government and non-governmental bodies to ensure Arusha city reclaims its past glory as a clean town.
He added that to start with, some 150 bins are to be purchased and placed at selected areas including places notorious for litter throwing so that they are collected for disposal. “The cleanliness campaign will also involve all Arusha residents,” he said during the launching of the programme outside the district commissioner’s office.
Speaking during the launch, Arusha Urban legislator (Chadema) Mr Godbless Lema, urged the residents of his constituency to improve the sanitation of the town.
He warned that Arusha may lose its credibility as an economic hub of the region and the headquarters of regional institutions because of poor sanitation and mountains of garbage. He commended the NGO which has also announced it would sponsor Form One students who missed places in public secondary schools this year.
