Wild elephants rampage through town in India

The elephants entered Mysore early this morning from a nearby forest, causing widespread panic among residents.

One barged into a college compound and roamed its grounds while the other walked into a residential area.

Two calves were attacked, before one of the elephants turned on a man, trampling him to death as crowds looked on.

Police were deployed to the area, while forest rangers and officials from the Mysore Zoo eventually managed to tranquilize and capture the animals.

Officials blamed the rampage on encroachment of human settlements into forested areas that are the natural habitat of elephants.

The two captured elephants are due to be released back into the forest later today.
